Show Description
Among those attending the "in concert" appearance of Jean Shepherd, radio personality, in the John F. Kennedy Memorial Series in Cranford High School at, 8:30 tonight will be a special guest, Michael Levy, a blind boy from Bradley Beach. As is the case with all those who are sightless, Michael must rely on his other, senses to guide him through each day. And through one of these other senses, that of hearing, he has gained a very special friend. He has never met this friend, only heard him. They have never touched hands, but they have touched minds, for Michael listens to his friend at 10:15 each night on Radio Station WOR. That friend is Jean Shepherd. Michael's 15th birthday anniversary is tomorrow, and when his father, Aaron Levy, heard of the scheduled appearance of Jean Shepherd at Cranford High School this evening, he thought to himself: "What a wonderful way for Mike to have a happy birthday!" To achieve that end, Mr. Levy jumped into his car and drove 55 miles to Cranford in, hopes of securing five tickets for his family to attend the show. He took with him a letter written to Joel Geller and George White, Jr., Organizer's of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Series, requesting the tickets he wished to give Michael for his birthday. Michael will get his birthday present - and more, for it has been suggested that he meet with his idol, Jean Shepherd, prior to the concert's start, to shake his hand and talk with the man whom he knows only by the sound of his voice. Mr. Levy remarked that this will be a birthday celebration that Michael, as well as his brother, Robert, his sister, Barbara, and his mother and father will never forget. The John F. Kennedy Memorial Series is sponsored by the Cranford Education Association and the Parent - Teacher Organization of Cranford and all proceeds go to the combined scholarship fund of these groups. Tickets for tonight's performance will be available at the door, or advance purchase may be arranged by contacting Mr. White at Hillside Avenue Junior High School.
