Show Description
HAMMOND -- The new community center being built in Dowling Park has gotten a name, but won't be open for another month. Although there was some discussion about allowing Hammond schoolchildren to select a name, board member Rick Bryant continued his push to call the building the Jean Shepherd Community Center. Board members agreed, and the decision was unanimous. Shepherd was a Hammond writer best known for his book, "A Christmas Story," which was made into a popular movie in 1983 that is frequently shown on TV during the holiday season. "He grew up in that neighborhood, and I don't think he's been given due respect in Hammond," Bryant said. "In addition to the name, I would like to see a display case with some of his books, and maybe have a Jean Shepherd film night once in a while."
